QUIKSILVER WIN JIM BEAM SURFTAG INDUSTRY CHALLENGE 15.10.2010 Mirroring the success of team rider Kelly Slater’s over night victory in Portugal, surf brand Quiksilver has today defeated 14 of their industry rivals to win the Jim Beam Surftag Industry Challenge in Sydney. The industry challenge pits surf industry employees against each other in teams of four in a one-hour relay style competition format. Each surfer must catch a total of three waves with their second “Power Wave” doubled. In less than perfect 1.0m waves at Curl Curl Beach, Quiksilver’s powerhouse team of Jesse Low, Tom Myers, Marcus Stocker and Fraser Standen narrowly edged out newcomers Powerlinez Surf Shop (Isaac Buckley, Ben Short, Nathan Mouncey, Mike Psillakis), Aloha Surf (Dustin Atkinson, Ollie Ingham, Beau Walker, Tim Hanrahan) and O’Neill (Rama McCabe, Rob Bain, Timmy Taplin, Justin Cook) to take the win. The shock exit of defending champions Hurley in the opening round of competition paved the way for the Quiksilver team who were out to secure their second ever Industry Challenge title. It was a two horse race in the decider as Powerlinez took a strong opening lead courtesy of some brilliant surfing from Issac Buckley. Quiksilver answered back strongly at the half way point when second surfer Tommy Myers entered the water, locking in a 28.70 out of a possible 40.00 to give the team a narrow lead. Aloha surf mounted a late comeback, which ultimately fell short while O’Neill struggled to find rhythm. The final scores were Quiksilver 69.38, Powerlinez 65.79, Aloha Surf 57.87 and O’Neill 31.01. “We won it 2008 and made the finals last year where Hurley absolutely smashed us, so it’s good to get back up there again,” said Quiksilver team captain Fraser Standen. “We have had a different line up in the teams each year, it’s a great day and everyone has a bit of fun, absolutely no training goes into it though.” “We all had a slumber party last night watching Kelly win in Portugal, today is obviously a result of that,” he joked. “Quiksilver is a massive company and we have the luxury of picking the best surfers from around Sydney, from all of the retail stores and the office departments here as well.” Quiksilver were awarded 20 cases of Jim Beam and 12 month bragging rights as the best surfing brand in Australia for their effort. “It’s always good to get on top of the other brands,” he said. Quiksilver’s Tommy Myers was also awarded a Sanyo Video Camera for the days highest scoring Power Wave, locked in during his blistering performance in the final. Tomorrow will see the second event of the 2011 Jim Beam Surftag Series, the “Trade Off” take place at Curl Curl. The third and final event of the Jesus Pro Am Series culminated in Cronulla in 2-3 foot contestable conditions over the weekend long competition. Event organizers were nervous about the quality of the waves, however the Alley came to the party - providing plenty of rides with huge scoring potential, highlighted by a perfect 10 point ride by Cronulla's Jesse Horner in the preliminary rounds on Saturday. The Jesus Pro Am festival in the park brought a great crowd on Saturday, with local church's providing an array of free activities, including skateboarding, jumping castle, bands, and a live broadcast by Hope 103.2. The final of the Cadet boys came down to a local battle between Chris Robertson, and Zac Scott. Commentators built on the rivalry, as both surfers showcased great form all weekend. Scott appeared the favorite, coming off the back of an epic victory in Coffs Harbour early in the week at the Ripcurl Gromsearch. He held the lead until Robertson launched a blistering forehand array of critical turns to net a 7.8, the largest single wave of the final. The ride took Robinson from 4th to first place, to take out the $500 and his first Jesus Pro Am Cadet win. Ellie-Jean Coffey reinstated herself as one of the most dangerous junior surfers in the country, taking out both the Cadet Girls, and Open Women’s finals in front of hundreds of cheering spectators. 15 year old, Coffey showed amazing fitness and mature surfing to take out both finals. “Jesus ProAm is my favorite event to compete in.” Coffey said during her acceptance speech. “ Everyone is so friendly and there is such a great vibe. Thanks to Christian Surfers and thank you to Jesus for a great weekend.” In the Cadet Girls final Ellie-Jean Coffey edged out Jess Van Der Meer, Fiona Casey, and her sister, Holly-Sue Coffey. The first place pendulum swung between Angie Koops and Coffey as the Open Women’s finalists battled it out in testing conditions. A wave in the final minute saw Ellie-Jean Coffey take the lead when it mattered most. She collected $1000 for the win, adding to her $500 from the Cadet Girls final win. The Open mens brought previous winners together to battle it out in a man on man format, with series rating leader and Gold Coast winner, Ice Periera Ryan from Coolangatta, taking on Wollongong local and winner of the Coffs Harbour event, Nick Squires. Both surfers started the 20 minute final with high scores on the left at the alley rip bowl. Squires and Periera-Ryan proved their place in the final with massive turns and plenty of spray to keep the judges and spectators breathless. Squires, backed up with a solid right-hander, netting two big turns that impressed the judges, giving him a commanding lead. With 30 seconds remaining Ice required a 9.51, and pulled out a huge 'super-man' air, followed up with a vertical re-entry which had the Commentators and crowd cheering. But, Periera-Ryan fell just short of the required score leaving Nick Squires to claim the Jesus Pro Am Cronulla 2010 Open Mens Champion, ahead of Periera Ryan in 2nd, with Joel etherington of Cronulla, and Coby Nau of Woonoona, placing equal 3rd. The expression session saw Dru Adler take $300 for a single front side air-reverse. Close behind him was Merewether surfer Philippa Anderson showing the boys some incredible surfing, almost landing a huge backside rotation that would have had her in first place. Other notable mentions go to Josh Hay and Dylan Hayllar. The Jesus Pro Am Cronulla has been a huge success. During the Presentation, Christian Surfers Regional Coordinator, Dave Lovell reminded the crowd that “Surfers are often so busy chasing the next wave or experience; they may miss the free gift of eternal life offered by Jesus” The free hospitality at the event had everyone fed thanks to the awesome contribution of local churches and the generosity of Shire stores including Bakers Delight Caringbah, Gymea, Miranda and Muffin Break Miranda. A great community surf event involving six of the local boardriders clubs in the sutherland shire. ( Cronulla Boardriders, Elouera Boardriders, Christian Surfers, garie Boardriders, Point boardriders, sandshoes boardriders). A sunny 25 degree day with 4-5 ft south swell and offshore winds for competitors. After two qualifying surf tag heats of six represenatatives from each club, there was a final surf tag of the top four clubs.before the final there was an aerial expression session with a first prize of $300. I havent posted for a while, Ive been surfing, Autumn was pumping!!! There was a consistent pattern of swell, I dont think it was under 3ft for a month. Winter has started off average wave wise and it has been cold in Sydney as its ever been, well according to all the old salts I have been talking too. I will be starting work at Rip Curl Cronulla in August, if you need any thing to do with surfing we'll stock it, so come in and say Hi.

Hey Guys, Its been a mixed bag of surf conditions over summer in Sydney, with some big random days, some fun medium size waves and some small onshore days, at least the water has been really warm. I have added a photo of my current board quiver for this year and I am stoked. My Chilli boards are a 6'0 CN curve and a 6'2 A2 curve, these boards are the best boards I have ever surfed. They are so easy to surf but stillhigh performance,I would recommend Chilli boards to anyone! Hey guys, we have had a very inconsistent summer for waves and weather. The surf was 1-2 ft from the end of December till the end of January and then we got a monster swell on the first Wednesday in February which lasts one day. Then last week we have week of solid east swell and onshore winds. It's back to more summer like conditions this week with small waves and hot sunny days. I have Been loving my new chilli and lost boards thanks to Cronulla surf design. The 5'7 lost rocket I am surfing in waves 3ft and below goes awesome and with futures blackstix fins it's unstoppable. My Chilli boards are just really nice to surf, high performance but also forgiving, these guys have found the right formula and it shows. Until next time. I hope you are getting your share of waves. 2009 was a fantastic year for Christian Surfers Cronulla with over 120 competitors attending six pointscores throughout the year. Congratulations to all the division winners from beginners to experienced. I had a great year placing second in the Opens and receiving the perpetual trophy for Surfers surfer. Christian Surfers pointscore number 4 was held last Saturday 19.9.09, with clean 2-3ft waves at North Cronulla and it was a nice warm day, unfortunately by lunchtime the nor east sea breeze set in but that didn't stop the ethusiasm of competitors. I managed to finish 3rd in the final behind Crispy and Jordan. The Robertson brothers finished first and second in the juniors, some good results for the Express Surfboards team. After a three week flat spell the swell started to build to 3ft last sunday afternoon, just in time for the red bull mick fanning junior final. Congrats to Brett burcher the winner and I must say I surfed beside the contest area each day and there was some impressive surfing by the competitors. I have started writing a Cronulla and Bondi daily surf report for www.magicseaweed.com/Sydney-Cronulla, www.magicseaweed.com/Sydney-Bondi check it out. I am really stoked to be given the opportunity. I have been keeping a diary of surf conditions in Cronulla since I was a teenager and the reason I started this blog was to write about surfing in Cronulla and a surf report. This saturday 5.9.09 we have the Cronulla sharks boardriders from 8am at north cronulla, come down and have a look at some of the best surfers in Cronulla competing, the waves are forecast to be 3-4ft and winds will be offshore so it should make for a good day of surfing. Hey guys, August on the east coast of aus, started off goodfor waves but went downhill from there. The past two weeks have been small, but the swell did pick up to two foot at south facing beaches and it was a nice day too. We have some nice small wave sandbanks here at wanda beach cronulla. I had some fun on my on my 5'10 small wave board. Today was 2 foot it started off cold and cloudy but once the clouds burnt off it was warm and inviting. The red bull mick fanning junior contest was held yesterday and today at wanda and the surfing was exciting to watch. Cronulla christian surfers had there 3rd pointscore on the 15th august in fun 2-3ft waves at north cronulla, I won my first heat and got third in the final. Well its been a month since my last post and the surf in Sydney has been really consistent and the winds have been mostly offshore. There has been some epic days with 6foot waves and offshore winds. On the smaller days I have been surfing a 5'4 quad and thruster fin fish diamond tail with futures fins, so fast and whippy, easy to pick up waves on smaller days because it is wider and thicker, I can't wait to try one in epoxy. until next time, Have fun. adios, Vaughny

The surf has been good in Sydney since my last posting, there has been heaps of groundswell and offshore winds, great waves along the east coast. last Saturday Christian surfers Cronulla had there second pointscore for 2009 in great 3ft waves at the alley North Cronulla, I managed to get 3rd in the semi final and 5th place overall. On the 7.6.09 Cronulla boardriders had there 3rd pointscore for 2009 which was the nuggett memorial the waves were only 1-2ft but offshore winds and a sunny day made for a good day. Once again a great job was done on the day running the contest by Crispy and Camo and all involved. The king of the beach will be on this Saturday at North cronulla, where all boardriders clubs will field teams to battle it out for bragging rights as the best club in the shire for 2009. If you get the chance come down and have a look at some of the best surfers in the shire and some future surf stars as well. Well it has been almost a month since my last blog in April and the month of May has been a good one for surfers in sydney and all along the east coast of oz. Good size waves and offshore winds. I hope you had the chance to get amongst it. Lost Surfboards are working on some new epoxy blanks which are form the USA, they are really light and should last 3 times as long as regular boards, there are also parabolic stringers, which run along the rail of the board, if you want to check them out have a look at the lost surfboards website, chris ward surfs them, I will post a photo of mine when it is done. How good was Anzac Day, 6ft plus east swell with offshore winds all day, all cronulla breaks were pumping The island, windy, point, all beaches, reefs, vooie and solander, according to coastalwatch the whole east coast was epic, i hope you got a few barrels ,i know i got my fair share. The surf has been good for most of April, an absolute cracker. What a week of waves in Sydney and along the whole east coast, thanks to an intense low positioned nicely. Monday to Wednesday was solid with 6ft plus sets up to 8ft at east facing locations, winds were onshore though and it was hard to find a protected spot in cronulla anyway. Thursday and Friday cleaned up and the winds were offshore, there were some sick waves about, I surfed the alley at cronulla,which was so much fun as you can see in the picture above taken of me today by Macca of surf images.com.au. thanx Macca. Since my last blog 10days ago we have had some good surf in Sydney, the last week has been good with 3-4ft of east sou east swell and offshore winds in the mornings. Today the east sou east swell is starting to rise from 5ft up to a peak of 8ft tomorrow. Unfortunately the wind is also from the sou east and looks set to stay that way till next weekend. April in Sydney has seen no shortage of waves so far with a big east swell in the first week peaking at 8ft. The swell hung around for the weekend and was a solid 4ft,with Sunday morning being the pick with no wind in the morning, I have to thank John Veage for todays shot of me at the alley cronulla and was posted on the the st george and Sutherland shire website surf report. The swell was forecast to be 4ft today but it was only 2ft and with a full moon high tide it was too full, the wind was good though. Well there has a been a run of small sou east and nor east swell along Sydney's beaches since I last updated my blog. This weekend has increased in size with east facing beaches receiving 3ft sets, good conditions for the first part of the day with light offshore winds and then a sea breeze. looks like we may get a large east swell from tuesday arvo, according to the swell forecasts on coastalwatch and swellnet, it all depends where the east coast low evolves, Tomorrows report will be interesting. Christian surfers Cronulla held there first comp today and as usual it was run professionally, well done Crispy. A big turnout of groms, waves were perfect for them too, it was about 1ft and the nice little right hand bank at north cronulla is still holding. A good day had by all. I am looking forward to the next comp, I think all competitors are. There hasn't been a lot of swell in March so far, a couple of medium sized days here and there. Congrats to Joel Parko who won the Quik pro at Kirra, I hope it gets back to its incredible barrels, like 10 years ago. well February was a mixed month for waves, but there were some good days to be had with some solid swell and light winds. Cronulla boardriders first comp was held on the last weekend of Feb. There was some fun 3ft waves at the alley, light winds all morning. A good job by Camo running the comp, i am looking forward to comp 2. The quik pro is on at snapper and the third round is complete, Slater has been knocked out by wildcard Julian Wilson. Friday the 13th and the only thing scary about today is the blown out surf along Sydney's coast.

Good to see the swell build since Monday the 9th feb, it was ok till Thursday and then it got windy and onshore from the sou east.

Check coastal watch for the forecast, hopefully the wind dies off soon.

I have to thank Paul at express surf for the two sick custom boards I got off him last Saturday.

Well we have had small waves for most of January 2009, especially here in cronulla because most of the swell has been from the north east which mostly misses cronulla. There has been some 3ft nor east swell but we only get 2ft max. There was one weekend in Jan when it got to 3-4ft but It only lasted 3 days. At least the water has been warm and so has the weather.Good luck to you if you live near a spot that gets the nor east swell because you have probably had some fun waves. February hasn't started off with much swell so far either, small 2ft nor east swell for the first week is forecast along the nsw east coast. I have been surfing early every morning regardless, its a great way to start the day watching the sunrise and have been lucky enough to get some photos taken of me, thanks to Macca at surfimages.com.au, Matt at thesealife.com.au and John Veage at the leader.com.au. Well after a months hiatus i am back on the blog, with my daily surf report and writing about everything to do with surfing. The month of September has been quite mixed surf wise hear in Sydney. There hasn't been many solid swells over all. Today was some of the biggest surf we have seen this month with 3foot sets hitting Sydney's beaches. The winds early were blowing southerly at about 20knots. The south swell was biggest here in cronulla at greenhills. Mid morning and the wind slowly swung east and by 11am it was from thenor east at about 20 knots. Tomorrow morning will see 3foot of south east swell slowly getting smaller as the day goes on.By Friday the swell is forecast to turn to the nor east and will be 1-2foot. Until then have a great day. Tuesday and the swell was 1-2ft from the sou east along Sydney's coast,the wind was sou west early and by 10am it was blowing from the sou east and got stronger as the day went on, not much on offer, I had a quick surf at Wanda and it was pretty average. Wednesday and the surf is 1ft from the sou east along Sydney's coast and the winds are straight onshore from the east sou east, really below average conditions, not worth a surf today unless you are really kean. Sunday 24.08.08; the swell is still solid from the sou east at 6ft and the winds are moderate from the sou west, a bit of bump in the swell, good options for a surf at southern protected corners. The red bull junior surf comp is on at north cronulla with some big bomb left handers on offer. Well the surf has hung in there along Sydney's beaches its 2ft from the sou east and the winds are offshore from the west and are very light, so it is well worth a surf along south facing swell magnets. It is less consistent than yesterday, there are some nice sandbanks along cronulla beaches for this size swell. I didn't get to file a report yesterday as i was working my butt off. But know there was 4ft of south swell on offer along sydneys coast and it was well worth a surf before the wind came up onshore after lunch. I got the chance to have a surf today, the swell was hanging in there at Sydney's south facing beaches about 2-3ft on the sets and with offshore west winds and 20 degree air temps it was a nice fun day for a surf. I caught some nice little waves up past Wanda. Tomorrow is forecast to be smaller again with 1-2ft south swell and offshore winds and the same again on Friday, with winds by mid morning picking up from the sou west and by Saturday there should be a solid 6ft plus of south swell. until tomorrow, enjoy your day. adios, vaughny.

The swell is pumping today along Sydney's beaches it is up to 6ft at south facing beaches and 4ft in southern corners, winds are offshore from the west at about 10-15 knots, air temp is 18 degrees,an excellent day for surfing, get wet if you get the chance. I am taking the kids for surf lessons at south cronulla, where it is a pleasant 2-3ft, its too big for them at north cronulla where sets are a solid 5ft. I saw some nice waves out the island and point, but it is very crowded and a bit of a wait between sets,but if you can get one to yourself, it is well worth it. Forecast for tomorrow is for the swell to drop by about 2ft, but once again the winds will be offshore, so it will be worth a surf. The water is about 16 degrees depending on where you get wet. A disappointing day for surfers on Sydney's beaches today as forecast. Tomorrow is looking good and so is the next few days. Coastalwatch forecast is for 3-4ft south swell and west south west winds, which will be 15 knots in the morning and up to 30 kts in the arvo. the swell is set to rise to 6foot on Friday and into the weekend. A nice rise in swell this morning along Sydney's beaches, its up to 3-4ft from the south, the wind is offshore from the west but its quite strong at about 15-20knots, well worth a surf if you get a chance. I had a surf out cronulla point,although it was only breaking on first reef and was inconsistent,when you got a wave they were really fun. Tomorrow the swell is forecast to build from the south up to 4ft,with stronger west winds so it will be worth checking your local spot. until then, have a great day and get wet. Adios, Vaughny.

The swell this morning is 1-2ft from the sou east with sou west winds along Sydney's beaches. The swell this afternoon will push up to 3ft. The best stop for a surf will be south corners,points reefs etc as they will be more protected. I was just given a copy of Taylor Steele's film sipping jetstreams, great movie, i cant wait to get my hands on his new movie, stranger than fiction, it was good to see some Aussies in there having a go. The surf along Sydney's beaches for Saturday is a fun 2-3ft from the south with offshore west winds,well worth a surf if you get a chance, i didn't get a chance, i took the family to the zoo for the day and what a great day it was blue skies and 17 degrees. Today the surf is smaller at 1-2ft from the south with west winds, it is worth a surf again today, you may want to use a wider thicker board though. Tomorrow morning is forecast to be smaller again, but we may see an increase in swell late in the arvo, until then have a great day. Adios, vaughny

The swell started off at 2ft from the south this morning but rose to 4ft lunchtime,winds were sou west this morning and more southerly this arvo. Some nice 3ft waves in southern protected corners. We coached the kids at south cronulla,some nice 2ft waves there. The forecast for tomorrow is for 3ft waves from the south with offshore west winds, should be some nice fun waves along Sydney's beaches, get out there if you can. Until then , enjoy your day. What a great day on Sydney's beaches, blue skies, offshore winds and 2-3ft of sou east swell, making for fun beach breaks along Sydney's coast. I had a really fun surf at the wall at cronulla, nice punchy righthanders. I tried the new al merrick fibreglass fin, they surf really well, fast, drivey and responsive. Tomorrow is looking like a very similar day to today, weather wise and surf wise. So if you get the chance get wet, the forecast is for a little spike in the swell into the arvo. The swell is only 1-2ft from the south this morning on Sydney's beaches, the wind is south west and is due to get stronger, with the wind the swell will get a bit bigger, up to 3ft of sou east windswell. Tomorrow the swell will hanging there at the same size in the morning but will fade by the arvo, winds will be offshore from the west, so it looks like it will be worth a paddle at a south facing location. I didn't get a chance to post a surf report yesterday, but i can tell you the surf in Sydney was small at best 2feet from the south, winds were sou west in the morning and nor east in the arvo, if you didn't get to surf don't worry you didn't miss much. Today is even smaller at 1foot from the sou east, with sou west winds in the morning and southerly winds in the arvo, not a good day for surfing, if you are kean have a surf in the morning before the onshore winds. Congrats to Bruce irons for winning the rip curl pro in Indonesia 'somewhere' close to ulus maybe, the waves looked like fun, wish i was there. Tomorrow there should be slight improvement in surf conditions on Sydney's beaches with a sou east wind swell up to 3ft and west sou west winds in the morning followed by stronger sou west winds in the arvo, according to coastal watch forecast, check out there page on my link just below this report on the right.
